Immigration

Immigration Unit Essential Question:  How has immigration changed the United States?

Picture
For my fourth semester practicum placement, I was in a combined fourth and fifth grade classroom with a very diverse population of students. Many of these students have close family members who have immigrated to the United States, and some students are immigrants themselves. Because of students' very close relationship to immigration, I decided to create a unit that would allow the students to discover more about that part of their personal history, along with the history of the United States. My goal was to create a series of lessons that would inform and draw upon the experiences of my students.

The photo seen here is an artifact created from the first lesson in the immigration unit.  Every student came to the front of the room to share a bit of their family's history and locate where their family is from.  The students enjoyed looking at this map throughout the unit and discovering more about the wide range of cultural backgrounds present in their
classroom community.
